Kayah people need to get a lawyer to protect their rights

In Kayah State, the Burmese Army confiscated villagers’ farms to build military academies. Not only did they confiscate those farms but they also surveyed other residents’ farms. One resident of Faruso village said “Our people need a lawyer who understands the 2008 constitution and can report about this kind of issue and help us with the legal system. In a meeting of the government and the KNPP, the KNPP discussed with U Aung Min, the train transportation minister, about the confiscation of villagers’ farms. U Aung Min said “I can’t decide about that issue. I will report it to our president. If the farms have owners, we will give remuneration for those farms.” Last year, the Burmese Army confiscated 2,700 acres farmland to build military academies. In 2012, a Chinese company was permitted by the government to confiscate 1,200 acres of farmland to build a cement factory north-east of Loikaw. And in 2008-2009, Burmese authorities confiscated 60 acres in Bawlakae, 50 acres in Faruso, 80 acres in Deemob and Ngwetaung and an industrial estate in Loikaw.
