The community center was opened in 1999. The objective was to provide a secure place to stay for pregnant women who cannot live in factories, workers who have been fired, and sick or injured workers. The first community center opened near the Mae Sot market. In 2003 the community center moved to its present location near the UNHCR office on Mae Tao Road, Mae Sot. Those seeking shelter who have arrived at the community center include pregnant women who have not been given permission to stay at their factories, those engaging in labour disputes over work grievances, those illegally fired from their workplace, those suffering injuries, old people without family or other support, those who cannot return home for various reasons, and people who have fled their country due to various difficulties. On average between 700 and 800 people come to the community center each year. Yaung Chi Oo Workers' Association conducts activities for those who come to the community center including discussions, trainings and awareness raising on democracy, human rights and workers’ rights; celebrations for commemorative events and special days; sewing and knitting training; and helping workers find employment.
